Larry P. Thornton's courses include Tsarist Russia (His241), The Soviet Union (His242), The World Since 1945 (His264), Studies in World History (off-campus study tours to Ireland and Vietnam, His265), The Holocaust (His325),  The French Revolution and Napoleon (His348), Nazi Germany (His349), and Genocide and the Holocaust (His352).

Professor Thornton's current research includes statements on war by Oxford University undergraduates between the two world wars (using student newspapers, short stories, poetry, essays, and other printed sources).
