Marie Ester Brandt Diary
1849-1869
(in progress)

Marie Ester Brandt (1823-1915) lived in Hanover, Indiana, most of her life, and she kept a diary from 1849 to 1869.  During that time, her family kept a boarding house for Hanover College students, so her diary sometimes includes reports on them and on events at the College.  It also includes details of the ordinary activities of her family and neighbors.

Transcriptions (in progress) are by students in His229 "American Women's History" (taught by Sarah McNair Vosmeier in Winter 2020 and 2022) and in His234 (taught by Sarah McNair Vosmeier in Winter 2023).  We have attempted to transcribe the diary faithfully, including odd spellings and syntax.  When appropriate, we have supplied guesses or explanations in square brackets [like so], and we have made minor adjustments in punctuation for clarity.

The Indiana Historical Society owns the original diary and has granted permission to reproduce it here.

preachers, and will have a chance of going back with Mrs. Finsley, one of the preachers' wives the next Tuesday.  It will be a good chance for her to come & go.  We had Josey Leonard & Fritz to dig our potatos they found nearly a quart of grub worms.  the potatos are very badly eaten by them.  we have been quite busy all day.

Monday 18th September
A good deal cooler particularly tonight.  I hope we may not have frost yet.  We washed and have been busy all day.  Brother Beswick was in a while [torn] this afternoon.  One of our little chicken died this morning, and another one looks like it would live through the night, we don't know what is the matter with them.  They eat a great grub worms Saturday and we think the bees have stung them, so we don't know what is the matter with.  It may be the rain, the cold turn in the weather.  They are just a week old today.

Tuesday 19th September
Weather clear & mostly so.   Cool, if there was frost it was not enough to do damage to vegitabes.  Cecile went to Madison with Mr. James Kyles, but did not come back.  Burtie was not there on the noon train.  So she waited for the night train and will remain over night.

Friday 22nd September. [1865]
Warm, cloudy in the morning.  We sent Burtie on & to Mrs. Woodard for some butter.  She complained of feeling quite tired when she came back and is threatened with a chill.  Mr. & Mrs Kyle came by, were [expectedly?] on on their way to Madison to attend Conference.  They wished me to go with them, but as I was out in the garden, & no ways ready, I thought I could not go, but they said they would wait so I hurried, & got myself ready.  & Cecile put up my things [&?] went & got there near noon.  I went to Mrs. Browns.  Mrs. Gale was down to church and I was there for dinner.  I have not seen her for a number of years.  Mrs. Brown went down to the [Chapel?] to look in on the Conference.  I saw several of our old preacher.  The subject of discussion was the Preachers And Society.  After we went home, Mary & I went to the river to see the mail boat, but as it was much behind time we did not wait for it, but in the meantime we looked in of the Gas Works & also saw the Ferry boat land three waggon loads of North Carolina Emigrants on their way to Johnson Co, 30 in all.  One family had nine children and nary one could read, so the women said.  their husbands had been conscripts in the Rebel Army -- I asked the women why they came away, she said the crops had failed there & they had nothing to eat or wear.  At night, Mr. Ingle Esq of Evansville & Dr Bowman, of Greencastle spoke on behalf of Asburry University.

Saturday 23rd
Warm somewhat cloudy.  Mary & I attended the morning session of the Conference.  Charlotte Dubach invited us to dinner with her, found them all friendly and sociable.  Mary & I went to the Chapel again in the afternoon, remained awhile, and then went down to Mrs. Sherman's and took supper with her.  we all came up to Church together, it being the [Missionary?] Anniversary, Dr Durbin & Dr. Wiley addressed the people on that subject after the report of the Treasurer was read, they were full of interest.  Dr. Durbin left for the boat as soon as he was through, for other engagements.

in it.  Bishop Morris preached at half past ten, after which five young ministers were ordained Deacons.  At half past one there was a childrens meeting addressed by Brothers Cotton & Erwin House Assistant Editor of the Advocate, the latter is quite a little dellicate specimen but understands talking to children is short and to the point.  After the exercises I bundled up and came home with Mr & Mrs Kyle.  I would like to have remained to hear Dr Wileys Ordination Sermon at three o‘clock at Roberts Chapel and Rev Smart of Detroit Conference, and agent for Garrett Biblical institute, who was to preach at the Chapel at night.  I heard him address the Conference on the subject of his agency and also speak at Love Feast.  I think he is an excellent speaker and an earnesthearted Christian.  When I came home I found Bertie sick.  she had had a chill Friday & another today so Cecile thought best to send for the Doctor, who was gone to Madison.  I did not get back till toward evening.  She was then better, he left medicine.  Musquitos are thick.

Monday, 25th September [1865]
Slow rain most of the morning.  Bertie seems better, she is taking quinine.  As she was to go home tomorrow with the gentleman she [strikeout: was to go home with her] came with, Cecile took her to Madison this afternoon to take the Cars in the morning.  Cecile will stay over night.  We had a letter from Josey this evening [writes?] Wednesday a long time coming.  We wrote to her this morning so that if Bertie did not get home tomorrow they need not feel uneasy about her.  I hope she will get home safe.  My neck & shoulders have been quite painfull all day.

Tuesday 26th, September
Mostly clear, warm sun & cool air.  I went out this afternoon to see Mrs Spencliff, she has been very sick but is some better.  Cecile came home in the stage.  Bertie had such a sore mouth this morning she could eat but little breakfast.  Brother Smith took charge of her.  Mr & Mrs Linsley were also along.  Cecile & Bertie staid over night at Mrs Thormas's.  Cecile took dinner at Mrs Hunts.

Weather clear.  I am writing with my left hand, but was making such a poor work I have changed to the right, & think I can do it.  I cut my hand badly this afternoon.  It is a deep cut and inch or so long right in the middle of my hand joining the wrist.  I was pressing the cork into a bottle that we were going to seal when it broke and cut into my hand.  It bled a good deal.  I have sticking plaster on it and have used pain killers, camphor and olive oil on it.  Mrs. Kyle came to go to prayermeeting but of course we could not go.  We have not had meeting for five weeks.  We got a letter from Josey.  Bertie got home safe.

Saturday 30th September

Thursday 12th October [1865]
Heavy dews with fog, somewhat cloudy.  We went out with Drusilla Watts & spent part of the day with Mrs Tate.

Friday 13th October
Some slight showers of rain through the day.  The weather being rainy we were again prevented from holding our prayermeeting, this is the seventh week we have not met.  The S.S. Advocate came this evening.  it is the beginning of a new Volume.  it presents quite an engaging appearance in a new dress.  We bought 2 gallons of Molasses from [Bufilder?].  it is a good quality of Sorgum.  he hauled a half cord of wood for us.

Saturday 14th October

Tuesday 17th October
Some rain today and this evening.  We sent a letter to Josey.  The cut on my hand looks like it was heal though part of the adhesive plaster is still on it.  I used my hand darning a good part of the day without hurting it.  It will no doubt be tender for some time, but I hope it is healed.  Cecile is not well again.
Rev Mr Martindale spoke at the Chapel this evening.  he has been [opperating?] for several years as teacher or missionary in the states of South Carolina, Georgia & Florida, principally at Hilton Head, Port Royal & Charleston.  his remark were very interesting and would have been continued but for the lateness of the hour.
