- Thornton joined the Hanover College staff in 1986. He currently teaches GW132: The Avant-Garde II; His241: Tsarist Russia; His 242: The Soviet Union; His264: The World Since 1945; His265: Studies in World History (off-campus study tours to Ireland and Vietnam); His325: The Holocaust; His348: The French Revolution and Napoleon; His349: Nazi Germany; His352: Genocide and the Holocaust; MS126: Eurasia: Modern Societies 1850-Present.
- Current Research: Statements on war by Oxford University undergraduates between the two world wars. Documentary base is student newspapers, short stories, poetry, essays, and other printed sources.
