St.
LOUIS, Saturday, May 23
INDIAN
HOSTILITIES
A letter received from a gentleman at
Chicago by gov. Howard, states, that murders have lately
been committed by the Indians in that neighborhood, that
the inhabitants have collected at Fort Dearborne for
safety, also that some people have been killed on the
frontier of Ohio.
A boat was fired on a few days since descending the
Mississippi to this place, none of the crew were hurt;
between the place where they were attacked and Fort Mason
they discovered another party on the bank who retired upon
discovering them. Notwithstanding the repeated
attempts which the Indians seem to have made to invade the
frontier of Louisiana this spring, from the vigilance and
activity of the rangers they have nothing yet to boast of,
but the loss of some of their warriors.
