The Indiana Association of Historians is an organization open to anyone interested
in the study, enjoyment, and promotion of history. The IAH brings together
educators, scholars, genealogists, archivists, public historians, librarians,
and the interested public in pursuit of history. In short, if you love history
and wish to engage with others your passion, the Indiana Association of Historians
is for you.
The IAH was founded in 1980 and held its first annual meeting in 1981. The
annual meeting / conference, usually held in the spring, brings together those
interested in history from around the state and nation. Past keynote speakers
include Stephen Ambrose, John Higham, Peter Gay, and Mary Beth Norton.
In addition to the annual meeting, the IAH sponsors a public lecture, hosted
by Butler University. The Thornbrough Lecture, named in honor of Emma Lou
and Gayle Thornbrough, both among the founders of the IAH, aspires to put
before the public some of the leading practitioners of the historical craft
working on subjects of broad interest and appeal. Speakers have included Leon
Litwack, Ronald Takaki, and Sandra Freitag.
Each spring the IAH honors its longtime secretary, Robert M. Taylor, Jr.,
by sponsoring a keynote address at its annual meetings — the Robert M. Taylor,
Jr., Memorial Lecture — which attracts renowned historians and other students
of U.S., European, and World history.
