Changes in the Hanover History Department, 1998-99


In 1999, as in the past several years, change remains the order of the day in the History Department.

Xi Lian, the Department's East Asian specialist since 1996, has taken a position in the History Department at Seattle Pacific University.

G.M. Curtis continues to serve as a Visiting Scholar at Liberty Fund. At Hanover this year, he will teach both terms of his Legal and Constitutional History. You may reach Curtis at

Eileen Cheng , who was Curtis's leave replacement in 1997-98 and 1998-99, is an Assistant Professor of History at Sarah Lawrence College. You may contact her at

Matt Vosmeier will serve as Curtis's leave replacement in 1999-2000. A specialist in Early American History, he is currently completing his Ph.D. at Indiana University, writing a dissertation titled, "The Western Whig Persuasion: Party Organization and Political Culture in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, 1834-1840."

Larry Thornton returns to the History Department full time this year after serving three years as the Associate Dean of the College.

Jeffrey Brautigamis Hanover's new Director of the Center for Free Inquiry. He will continue to teach part-time in the Department in 1999-2000.

Dan Murphy also returns to the Department full-time after serving as Hanover's first Outreach Coordinator and Director of the Center for Free Inquiry.

Jon Enriquez is the new Registrar and Associate Dean, but he is also a historian and will be teaching at least one course per year in the Department. His specialty is twentieth century popular culture and politics. He recently received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University, writing a dissertation titled "Theodore White and the Remaking of Political Journalism."
