Changes in the Hanover History Department, 1996-97



Jeff Brautigam is the new Assistant Professor of Modern European History, replacing Larry Thornton who is serving as the new Associate Dean. Brautigam combines expertise in modern British history and the history of science. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Florida where he authored the dissertation, "Inventing Biometry, Inventing 'Man': Bimetrica and the transformation of the Human Sciences." Brautigam has taught for the last three years at Temple University and has also taught at Georgia Southern University.

Xi Lian is the new Assistant Professor of East Asian History, replacing Tze-ki Hon who is on leave this year. Xi has recently published a book, The Conversion of Missionaries: Liberalism in American Protestant Missions in China, 1907-1932, with Penn State University Press. He earned his Doctor of Arts at State University of New York at Albany. He has taught at SUNY Albany, Union College, and Fujian Normal University, P.R. China.

Kathleen Comerford is now teaching at Austin College. Comerford served as Visiting Assistant Professor of History for one year, replacing Luttmer and Murphy who were frolicking about on sabbaticals. She may be reached at

Larry Thornton is the new Associate Dean of the College, replacing Jack Mathews, who retired this past year.
