Study Questions


Essays covering the last third of the course.
(You will select one of two.)

1. Write an essay that analyzes the evolution of Russia (Soviet Union) from the late Tzarist era to WWII. You should include a consideration of the origins of the Russian Revolution, Lenin and the NEP, and the Stalinist period.

2. Write an essay that analyzes the evolution of Russia (Soviet Union) since WWII. You should include in your essay an explanation of the collapse of the Soviet Union and Communism.

3. Write an essay that analyzes the origins and theory of Fascism in Europe, focusing on National Socialism (Nazism) in Germany.

4.Write an essay that analyzes politics and political culture in Western Europe and the United States since WWII. You should include a consideration of the welfare state, the New Left, the civil rights movement, feminism, and the resurgence of conservatism in the 1980s and 90s.

(You will select one of two.)

1. Write an essay that analyzes the origins and evolution of the modern Liberal tradition, in theory and practice, from its beginnings in the 17th century through the 20th century.

2. Write an essay that analyzes the evolution of the Marxist tradition, in theory and practice, from its beginnings in the writings of Marx and Engels through the 20th century.

3. Compare the economic, social, political, and cultureal development of Western Europe and the United States from the era of the Liberal Revolutions through the "Industrial Age" (1776-1914).

4. Compare the economic, social, political, and cultural development of Western Europe and the United States from the beginning of the "Industrial Age" to the present (1870 to the present).
