1. Fathiha
1:1
In the name of God
Most Gracious
Most Merciful.
1:2
Praise be to God
the Cherisher and Sustainer of the world;
1:3
Most Gracious
Most Merciful;
1:4
Master of the Day of Judgment.
1:5
Thee do we worship
and Thine aid we seek.
1:6
Show us the straight way
1:7
The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace
those whose (portion) is not wrath
and who go not astray.
2. Baqara
2:1
A.L.M.
2:2
This is the Book; in it is guidance sure
without doubt
to those who fear God;
2:3
Who believe in the Unseen
are steadfast in prayer
and spend out of what We have provided for them;
2:4
And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee
and sent before thy time
and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter.
2:5
They are on (true) guidance
from their Lord
and it is these who will prosper.
2:6
As to those who reject Faith
it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.
2:7
God hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing
and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur).
2:8
Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in God and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.
2:9
Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe
but they only deceive themselves
and realise (it) not! . . .
2:111
And they say: "None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian." Those are their (vain) desires. Say: "Produce your proof if ye are truthful."
2:112
Nay
-whoever submits His whole self to God and is a doer of good
- He will get his reward with his Lord; on such shall be no fear
nor shall they grieve.
2:113
The Jews say: "The Christians have naught (to stand) upon; and the Christians say: "The Jews have naught (To stand) upon." Yet they (Profess to) study the (same) Book. Like unto their word is what those say who know not; but God will judge bet ween them in their quarrel on the Day of Judgment.
2:114
And who is more unjust than he who forbids that in places for the worship of God
God's name should be celebrated?-whose zeal is (in fact) to ruin them? It was not fitting that such should themselves enter them except in fear. For them there is nothing but disgrace in this world
and in the world to come
an exceeding torment.
2:115
To God belong the east and the West: Whithersoever ye turn
there is the presence of God. For God is all-Pervading
all-Knowing.
2:116
They say: "God hath begotten a son" :Glory be to Him.-Nay
to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: everything renders worship to Him.
2:117
To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: When He decreeth a matter
He saith to it: "Be
and it is.
2:118
Say those without knowledge:
Why speaketh not God unto us? or why cometh not unto us a Sign?" So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike. We have indeed made clear the Signs unto any people who hold firmly to Faith (in their hearts).
2:119
Verily We have sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner: But of thee no question shall be asked of the Companions of the Blazing Fire.
2:120
Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion. Say: "The Guidance of God
-that is the (only) Guidance." Wert thou to follow their desires after the knowledge which hath reached thee
the n wouldst thou find neither Protector nor helper against God.
2:121
Those to whom We have sent the Book study it as it should be studied: They are the ones that believe therein: Those who reject faith therein
- the loss is their own.
2:122
O Children of Israel! call to mind the special favour which I bestowed upon you
and that I preferred you to all others (for My Message).
2:123
Then guard yourselves against a-Day when one soul shall not avail another
nor shall compensation be accepted from her nor shall intercession profit her nor shall anyone be helped (from outside).
2:124
And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain commands
which he fulfilled: He said: "I will make thee an Imam to the Nations." He pleaded: "And also (Imams) from my offspring!" He answered: "But My Promise is not within the rea ch of evil-doers."
2:125
Remember We made the House a place of assembly for men and a place of safety; and take ye the station of Abraham as a place of prayer; and We covenanted with Abraham and Isma'il
that they should sanctify My House for those who compass it roun d
or use it as a retreat
or bow
or prostrate themselves (therein in prayer).
2:126
And remember Abraham said: "My Lord
make this a City of Peace
and feed its people with fruits
-such of them as believe in God and the Last Day." He said: "(Yea)
and such as reject Faith
-for a while will I grant them their pleasure
but will soon drive them to the torment of Fire
- an evil destination (indeed)!"
2:127
And remember Abraham and Isma'il raised the foundations of the House (With this prayer): "Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us: For Thou art the All- Hearing
the All-knowing.
2:128
Our Lord! make of us Muslims
bowing to Thy (Will)
and of our progeny a people Muslim
bowing to Thy (will); and show us our place for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning
Most Merciful .
2:129
Our Lord! send amongst them an Apostle of their own
who shall rehearse Thy Signs to them and instruct them in scripture and wisdom
and sanctify them: For Thou art the Exalted in Might
the Wise.
2:130
And who turns away from the religion of Abraham but such as debase their souls with folly? Him We chose and rendered pure in this world: And he will be in the Hereafter in the ranks of the Righteous.
2:131
Behold! his Lord said to him: "Bow (thy will to Me):" He said: "I bow (my will) to the Lord and Cherisher of the Universe."
2:132
And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons
and so did Jacob; "Oh my sons! God hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of Islam. . . ."
3. Ali-Imran
3:1
A. L. M.
3:2
God! There is no god but He
-the Living
the Self-Subsisting
Eternal.
3:3
It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step)
in truth
the Book
confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this
as a guide to mankind
and He sent down the criterion (of judgment be tween right and wrong).
3:4
Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of God will suffer the severest penalty
and God is Exalted in Might
Lord of Retribution.
3:5
From God
verily nothing is hidden on earth or in the heavens.
3:6
He it is Who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god but He
the Exalted in Might
the Wise.
3:7
He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical
seeking discord
and searching for its hidden meanings
but no one knows its hidden meanings except God. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding. . . .
3:19
The Religion before God is Islam (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other
after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of God. . . .
God is swift in calling to account.
5. Maida
5:1
O ye who believe! fulfil (all) obligations.
5:2
Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals
with the exceptions named: But animals of the chase are forbidden while ye are in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb: for God doth command according to His will and plan.
5:3
O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of God
nor of the sacred month
nor of the animals brought for sacrifice
nor the garlands that mark out such animals
nor the people resorting to the sacred house
seeking of the bount y and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb
ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your par t). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety
but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear God: for God is strict in punishment.
5:4
Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat
blood
the flesh of swine
and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than God; that which hath been killed by strangling
or by a violent blow
or by a headlong fall
or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day hav e those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you
completed My favour upon you
and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger
w ith no inclination to transgression
God is indeed Oft-forgiving
Most Merciful.
5:5
They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food). Say: lawful unto you are (all) things good and pure: and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed to you by God: eat what they catch for you
but pronou nce the name of God over it: and fear God; for God is swift in taking account.
5:6
This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers
but chaste women am ong the People of the Book
revealed before your time
- when ye give them their due dowers
and desire chastity
not lewdness
nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith
fruitless is his work
and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those w ho have lost (all spiritual good).
5:7
O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer
wash your faces
and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity
bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill
or on a journey
or one of you cometh from offices of nature
or ye have been in contact with women
and ye find no water
then take for yourselves clean sand or earth
and rub therewith your faces and hands
God doth not wish to place you in a difficulty
but to make you clean
and to complete his favour to you
that ye may be grateful.
5:8
And call in remembrance the favour of God unto you
and His covenant
which He ratified with you
when ye said: "We hear and we obey": And fear God
for God knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.
5:9
O ye who believe! stand out firmly for God
as witnesses to fair dealing
and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God. For God is well-acquainted with al l that ye do.
5:10
To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath God promised forgiveness and a great reward.
5:11
Those who reject faith and deny our signs will be companions of Hell-fire.
5:12
O ye who believe! Call in remembrance the favour of God unto you when certain men formed the design to stretch out their hands against you
but (God) held back their hands from you: so fear God. And on God let believers put (all) their trust.
5:13
God did aforetime take a covenant from the Children of Israel
and we appointed twelve captains among them. And God said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular prayers
practise regular charity
believe in my apostles
honour and assis t them
and loan to God a beautiful loan
verily I will wipe out from you your evils
and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you
after this
resisteth faith
he hath truly wandered from the path or rectitude."
5:14
But because of their breach of their covenant
We cursed them
and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them
nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few - ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them
and overlook (their misdeeds): for God loveth those who are kind.
5:15
From those
too
who call themselves Christians
We did take a covenant
but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them
with enmity and hatred between the one and the other
to the day of judgment. And soo n will God show them what it is they have done.
5:16
O people of the Book! There hath come to you our Apostle
revealing to you much that ye used to hide in the Book
and passing over much (that is now unnecessary):
5:17
There hath come to you from God a (new) light and a perspicuous Book
-
5:18
Wherewith God guideth all who seek His good pleasure to ways of peace and safety
and leadeth them out of darkness
by His will
unto the light
- guideth them to a path that is straight.
5:19
In blasphemy indeed are those that say that God is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against God
if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary
his mother
and all every - one that is on the earth? For to God be longeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth
and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For God hath power over all things."
5:20
(Both) the Jews and the Christians say: "We are sons of God
and his beloved." Say: "Why then doth He punish you for your sins? Nay
ye are but men
- of the men he hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth
and He punisheth whom He pleaseth: and to God belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth
and all that is between: and unto Him is the final goal (of all)"
5:21
O People of the Book! Now hath come unto you
making (things) clear unto you
Our Apostle
after the break in (the series of) our apostles
lest ye should say: "There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner (from evil)": But now hath come unto you a bringer of glad tidings and a warner (from evil). And God hath power over all things.
