After the Chickasaw attack of the previous day, the Roosevelts had not fallen asleep easily.  Once they did, they were abruptly awakened by shouts in the night. Nicholas jumped out of bed, sword in hand to defend them, but they soon discovered that the alarm was something the crew took even more seriously than Indian attack -- fire on board.   Lydia remembered years later how feverishly they all worked to put it out.  They saved the steamboat, but when the sun rose, they were sorely disappointed to see how much of the beautiful interior woodwork had been destroyed.

As they continued down the river in daylight, they left the most dramatic earthquake damage behind, and the pilot could once again steer by all the expected landmarks.
