Schedule for Using the Scanner or Server in Classic 303B

Guidelines
Scanning, Saving Files, and Proofreading
- If you are using the scanner in Classic 303B, open Omnipage (there is an icon on the desktop), place the xerox copy (or book)onto the flatbed scanner, and click "scan" (the icon of the scanner).
- After the page is scanned, select either "continue" to scan a second page(repeating the procedure above for the second page) or "end" to save the file. As a general rule it is best to have smaller files of say 10 pages or so.
- Save the file as a Word file (.doc) in the "wordfiles" folder inside the "texts" folder (c:\wwwroot\html\texts)
- the file name is typically (in lower case) the author's last name (or a portion of it), with numbers following the name if there are chapters E.g. smith1.doc, smith2.doc
- make sure that everything is accurate i.e. that the electronic copy perfectly reproduces the original copy
- insert the page number in square brackets
Converting Word Files to HTML
- Using an html editor (or Notepad) open the appropriate generic html file in the "texts" folder.
- genchap.htm for chapters
- gentable.htm for table of content page with links to chapers
- gentxt.htm for one page texts
- gentxtan.htm for one page texts taken from an anthology
- Insert the appropriate bibliographical information and other material in the header.
- From the "edit" drag-down menu, pick "select all," then "copy," and then "paste" the file to a new (blank) file.
- Using Word, open the scanned Word file. From edit "select all," "copy" and "paste," inserting the text where indicated on the htm file. Add the necessary html mark-up language. E.g. < p > for paragraph, < br > for line break, < BLOCKQUOTE > BLOCKQUOTE > for blockquote, etc.
- Separate the original pages with a paragraph < p >.
- After the < p >, insert the page number in brackets, followed by a line break < br > E.g. < p > [Page 39] < br >.
- For more assistance in using html language, see
