History Unfolded:  U.S. Newspapers and the Holocaust

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is recruiting people across the country to do research in their local newspapers on topics related to the Holocaust. We will participate by looking for Madison Courier articles on immigration-related topics.  The cites and images we send in will become part of a national database to be used by scholars and by the museum staff in preparing an upcoming exhibit.

Before October 13, go to the History Unfolded homepage and click "start researching" to create an account.  Then, click "my profile" and "join a group" to join my "American Immigration History" group.

Next, read the following pages for background information on the project and some immigration-related topics included in it.

"Father Coughlin Blames Jews for Nazi Violence"
"Jewish Refugees Desperately Seek Safe Harbor"
"FDR Authorizes Incarceration of Japanese-Americans"

"About This Project"
"How to Read Newspapers from the 1930s and 1940s"

"How can I tell what type of article I am viewing?"
"What's a byline and what if there isn't one?"
"What do I do if my story continues on another page?"
(Access these questions by going to the help center and choosing "How can I tell what type of article I am viewing?" from the "General Information" drop-down button.  The other questions follow.)
