By one measure of class difference, graduates of elite schools such as Yale University belong to the upper class, while graduates of mainstream liberal arts schools such as Hanover College belong to the middle class. Review the Yale and Hanover webpages with links below. The pages are official documents of the two schools, and they are intended to give outsiders a sense of what typical Yalies and Hanoverians are like.
For our discussion on Wednesday, consider what (if anything of significance) distinguishes the student culture of the two places as represented by these webpages. As you do so, pay particular attention to the values, behaviors, and ways of expressing themselves that the students seem to have learned (consciously or unconsciously) and that might mark a sense of group identity.
Note that you may need to download a helper file to view the Yale pages, and you will need the sound on your computer for them. (If you're working in the library computer lab, you can check out earphones from the circulation desk.)
For nine representative Yale students:
Go to the Yale University Online Tour - Click "Launch the Tour." Then, at the "Welcome" page, scroll through the slide shows on the left and choose "Voice: Who Are Your Roommates?"
For seven representative Hanover students:
Follow each of the links below. Consider the way students are presented on the main page, and then click on the link for "Meet [student name]" under the large photograph.
