Context. What else was happening when the document was written?

Audience. To whom was the document directed?

Thesis/Argument. Why was the document written? What is the author's argument; that is, of what is the author trying to convince the audience?

Evidence. What does the author use to support the argument?

Tone: What is the emotional tone of the author? Reasoned, polemic, empathetic, etc.?

Connections. How does this document relate to the themes of the class?
